I don't know if this has been mentioned, but if you recite any of Emily Dickinson's poems out loud, most can be recited to the exact same rythym of "The Yellow Rose of Texas." Pretty funny huh...
not most lol, but some..sry for the exaggeration!! : )
not all but many. "The Bustle in a House" loses some of its weight when sung to that lighthearted tune.
Old news, Bo. Do a search for ballad meter for the reason why, such as:

Yeah, Yellow Rose is a ballad.
You can sing "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" to the tune of "Hernando's Hideaway" too ...
but (to quote Chris Rock):
THAT DON'T MEAN IT'S A GOOD IDEA!!!
Ummm, what exactly is "Hernando's Hideaway"?
Hernando’s Hideaway
Archie Bleyer
(Richard Adler-Jerry Ross)
from the musical "The Pajama Game"
I know a dark secluded place.
A place where no one knows your face.
A glass of wine, a fast embrace.
It’s called Hernando’s Hideaway. Ole!
All you’ll see are silhouettes.
And all you’ll hear are castanets.
And no one cares how late it gets.
Not at Hernando’s Hideaway. Ole!
At the Golden Fingerbowl or any place you go
You will meet your Uncle Max and everyone you know,
But if you’ll go to the spot that I am thinkin?of,
You will be free to gaze at me and talk of love.
Just knock thee times and whisper low
That you and I were sent by Joe,
Then strike a match and you will know
You’re in Hernando’s Hideway. Ole!
Just knock three times and whisper low
That you and I were sent by Joe,
Then strike a match and you will know
You’re in Hernando’s Hideaway.
'To see his woods fill up with snow. Ole!'
Hey, I like it.
pam
You are making me laugh
Perhaps we could start the rumor that ED wrote 'Yellow Rose of Texas.'
pam
She didn't - it was Thomas Hardy! And if anyone attributes it to someone else, he'll haunt them!
I've heard that the Gilligan's Island Theme works for ED poems too.
BTW....season 5 of Babylon 5 episode "Day of the Dead" mentions the "Yellow Rose of Texas" connection too
