Hiya everyone. Im gonna have to analyze a poem and i think im gonna choose A dream within a Dream by Edgar allen poe.
Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow-
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.
I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand-
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep- while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?
Im having trouble analyzing it. The only thing i can think of is that hes refering to life and that it all might be a dream and nothing is real. Other than that im clueless. So if anyone has some indepth analysis then could you please share? Thank you
Altema, the proper category for this type of question is the Homework Assistance forum, please post this over there.
Here's a previous discussion held on that forum:

Also go to Google type in "A Dream Within a Dream, poem, criticism". That should give you much to ponder.

Altema, why did you pick this particular poem? You must have had some clue.
The assignment was to choose a poem that struck you. I was reading alot and nothing seemed to interest me.
I think its about how he lost someone he loved and he spent his whole time with her like it was a dream and not real. i also think the wave is referancing to god.
I hope this helps
