Here's a new thought!
Posted by: Keeper of Light (---.texoma.net)

Since this is the General Discussion I decided that I want to discuss something general.

Here it goes.

My favorite word is "Free." It is absolutely beautiful. It means so much. It is so small. It sounds nice ringing in the ear.

Okay, so what's your favorite word?

"Loving people is like farting in the wind; You don't actually accomplish anything, but you feel better."

I quite like 'verisimilitude'. And 'tetotalitarianism'.
They're not easy words to fit into poems or song lyrics though.

he probably made it up; but i like it anyway.

The population is too small to get any groupings. Nice thought-I'll
still go for reciprocity-perhaps reciprocity puts the free in freedom.

Surf over to Holiday Themes.com and download the Desktop theme for July Fourth, of New York harbor at night with fireworks blazing in the sky. Dark yet light. And for lagniappe (there's a nice word), a chorus sings "We shall be free!".

well, it is a vague question, but i like ur topic. word, can i ask a question first? meanings of a word are there becasue of the existence of the word, or the word is there because of the the unamed emotions, objects, and anything like that? My favorite word is FLY, because it has a meaning of my own.

Well, I guess my favourite word is 'chocolate', since it produces Pavlovian drooling in me every time.

On the other hand, the playwright Dennis Potter felt "elbow" was the most beautiful word in the language. Can't say it does it for me.

My favorite word is humility. It is my personal opinion that between it and patience many things would go much more smoothly.

Are you humble? Are you patient? I think perhaps not. That is why nothing goes too smoothly.

Cruel? I have no desire to be cruel. I think that perhaps it is good that you are trying to do better. What is all of this "Dear sister" stuff anyway?

Well, well... favorite word?

Context is everything. I love the word "slut" the way Kristen Scott Thomas says it in "Four Weddings and a Funeral."

I love the word "Auntmarian" the way my nephews say it--kind of like "amp-Marian."

I love the word "desperado" in the song by the Eagles.

And I have - I admit it - a great fondness for words of many syllables, especially when words of fewer syllables will do. Why say "old" when you can say "antideluvian"? Why say "bad" when you can say "reprehensible"? Incontrovertible! Ambidextrous!

And then there are neologisms. (Why say "newly invented words" when you can say "neologisms"?)

My current favorite is the word invented by Will Ferrell, doing a wicked impersonation of James Lipton: "scrumptrilescent."

One of my past favorites was a word coined by a woman on the news, complaining about complicated voting ballots. She said they should be "simplerized."

========

When I was 12, I took a poll of my own, asking everyone I could find to come up with a favorite word. I recall the answers falling into three categories:

--Words that mean something good (love, freedom, etc.).

--Words that sound nice (Candelaria was one person's choice; it's the name of a street in the city where I lived at the time).

--The names of loved ones.

The street I live on is called "Topinabee". I think it is associated with the Native Americans because some other streets nearby are Cherokee, Mohawk, Techumseh, Potowanamie. Does anyone know what Topinabee is and the correct way to pronunciate it? I always say Top-in-ah-bee, my husband says tope-in-uh-bee.

The website for a town in MICHIGAN says:

Topinabee, (pronounced: TOP ‘n-uh-bee), is located on beautiful Mullett Lake in Mullett Township.

Pronunciations do change over time. If you're interested in the "original" and/or historical pronunciation(s) of the name, try sending an email to the public library there:
