God, Thou Art Love
If I forget,
Yet God remembers! If these hands of mine
Cease from their clinging, yet the hands devine
Hold me so firmly that I cannot fall;
And if sometimes I am too tired to call
For Him to help me, then He reads the prayer
Unspoken in my heart, and lifts my care.
I dare not fear, since certainly I know
That I am in God's keeping, shielded so
From all that else would harm, and in the hour
Of stern temptation strengthened by His power;
I tread no path in life to Him unknown;
I lift no burden, bear no pain, alone:
My soul a calm, sure hiding-place has found:
The everlasting arms my life surround.
God, Thou art love! I build my faith on that.
I know Thee who has kept my path, and made
Light for me in the darkness, tempering sorrow
So that it reached me like a solemn joy;
It were too strange that I should doubt Thy love.
-Robert Browning
Not by Bread Alone
Man does not live by bread alone,
but by the lyrics and sonnets of poets,
the mature wisdom of sages,
the holiness of saints,
the biographies of great souls,
the life-giving words of Holy Scripture.

My God Is There Controlling
We search the starlit Milky Way,
A million worlds in rhythmic sway,
Yet in our blindness some will say,
"There is no God controlling!"
But as I grope from sphere to sphere,
New wonders crowd the eye, the ear,
And faith grows firmer every year:
"My God is there, controlling!"
We probe the atoms for their cause,
Explore the earth for nature's laws,
Yet seldom in our searching pause
To think of God controlling.
Each flash of fact from out the night,
Each burst of truth upon my sight
That quickens awe or adds delight,
Reveals my God controlling.
-William H. Reid
Christ Is Crucified Anew
Not only once, and long ago,
There on Golgotha's side,
Has Christ, the Lord, been crucified
Because He loved a lost world so.
But hourly souls, sin-satisfied,
Mock His great love, flout His commands.
And I drive nails deep in His hands,
You thrust the spear within His side.
-John Richard Moreland
Answered Prayer
I asked God for strength,
that I might acheive,
I was made weak,
that I might learn humbly to obey...
I asked for health,
that I might do greater things,
I was given infirmity,
that I might do better things...
I asked for riches,
that I might be happy,
I was given poverty,
that I might be wise...
I asked for power,
that I might have the praise of men,
I was given weakness,
that I might feel the need of God...
I asked for all things,
that I might enjoy life,
I was given life,
that I might enjoy all things...
I got nothing I asked for-
but everything I had hoped for;
Almost despite myself,
my unspoken prayers were answered.
I am among all men most richly blessed.

*I found all of these in a hymnal. I liked them so I posted them. Does anyone else have any thoughts about them?
"Loving people is like farting in the wind; You don't actually accomplish anything, but you feel better."

I like the Moreland. He's not saying 'Christ died for YOUR sins, but for OURS.
pam
The Browning work reminds me of the Lord's Prayer. best, dlc
Exactly! I knew that someone would see it my way.
