A dear friend of mine remembers this "line from a poem" -- I think it might be from something other than a poem -- and wants to track down the source.
Can anyone help?

A man is known by the friends/company he keeps.

Yes... it reminds me also of "Give me the child until he is seven years old, and I will give you the man."
(Notoriously unhelpful in girl's school teaching.)
