Kiplings poem reffers to the captain that lead the charge in Africa that may have resulted in the Boer war. This is a fantastic poem and well worth all the priase, but does anyone know of greater information that found on the history of the poem itself.
Cheers.

There it says that Kipling was inspired by "Jameson and Rhodes." (Cecil Rhodes and Leander Starr Jameson)
