I've read somewhere that he wrote a poem Curse in the Old Manner, and I'd like to read it but can't find it online. Any ideas old chums?
Stephen:
The only info I was able to dig up is that the poem was published in the British magazine, The Bookman in 1927, but you probably know that already. Perhaps some of your country's larger libraries, or a collector of old books and magazines, may have a copy available for viewing.
Joe
Thanks Joe.
The Bookman was actually an American magazine. There's a copy of this issue on ebay but though the price is fair the postage to the UK is high. Do any US libraries carry old magazines?
Stephen
Stephen:
I stand corrected about The Bookman. I live close to New York City and will contact them about the magazine. If they have the issue you're looking for, it may be possible to have the poem reproduced, in which case, I will scan it into MS Word and forward it to you.
Joe
Hi everyone
Can Joe or anyone help me out with this still unsolved item?
Stephen
I don't have it in my books anywhere - just had a good look. I collect curses (I did type cursed, originally and though I liked the typo felt I'd better edit it)and other derogatory poetry (among many other themes), so there was a slight chance - it's not in The Penguin Book of Unrespectable Verse, which was my best bet.

In September 1918, The Bookman was sold to the George H. Doran Company, which merged with Doubleday, Page & Company in 1927 to become Doubleday, Doran.
Thank you for this. Do you know how to access back issues of the magazine please?

Accuse one of cooling because they said yes!

Thankyou Peter. An amusing enough piece, but not up there with his novels methinks!

A bit of a damp squib after all that effort - I was hoping for real vitriol

Hammett's writing career was short. He produced four novels and almost all of his short stories between 1922 and 1931, a span of barely nine years. A fifth novel (The Thin Man) followed in 1934. Then... nothing.
