The Phantom-Wooer

A ghost, that loved a lady fair,
Ever in the starry air
Of midnight at her pillow stood;
And, with a sweetness skies above
The luring words of human love
Her soul the phantom wooed.
Sweet and sweet is their poisoned note,
The little snakes of silver throat,
In mossy skulls that nest and lie,
Ever singing, 'die, oh! die.'

Young soul, put off your flesh, and come
With me into the quiet tomb,
Our bed is lovely, dark, and sweet;
The earth will swing us, as she goes,
Beneath our coverlid of snows,
And the warm leaden sheet.
Dear and dear is their poisoned note,

This one intrigues me - I find it very seductive, and keep going back to it. It raises questions in my mind - is love death? is death love? Does falling in love make one 'dead' to other potential loves. Does it appeal to anyone else?

Well, to me obviously, since I commented on it in another post. I see it as death's lure to the living. The dream pedlary one I thought had a similar theme - in that one, I said Beddoes was claiming that death was superior to life. That is, death is the reality and life the dream. Since what we experience after death is superior to what we have now in life, we should hasten to reach what lies beyond, he believes.

Not a tempting philosophy to me personally since, if he is right, I will eventually experience it in any case; but if wrong, I immediately lose forever all that I might have experienced while alive. Same argument against those who claim we should forego all earthly pleasures in pursuit of a promised heaven. If they are wrong, we forfeit all that we could have enjoyed by seeking the false reward.

Be a suicide bomber? Not for me, thanks anyway.

Sorry, Hugh - I got the poem from a book I was reading - must have missed your post about it.

When one of my sons was an infant he asked me why I didn't kill him, as being with Jesus in Heaven was so much nicer than being here, and we'd end up there anyway - he's always been one for instant gratification. I was a bit stuck for an answer to that one. Fortunately he rapidly grew out of such tendencies - I hope!

I really like both those Beddow poems - the only two I know - without going along with his philosophy too far - must find some others and see if he only has the one theme. It's interesting how often one can prefer a poem or a person you disagree fundamentally with to one that fits your philosophy - I'm never sure if it's healthy or hypocritical.

Well, it's like reading your man Kipling, doncha know. Can't agree with his points of view, but he says them so brilliantly!

I have probably read Boddoes's Dream-Pedlary one dozens of times, searching both for the correct interpretation and whatever secrets he may have hidden therein. Cannot say I am 100% sure I have nailed the message(s) correctly, but he writes so well, one suspects he may very well know some answers unrevealed to us lesser folks.
