I last read it nearly 40 years ago at much the same time as I read Marlowe's Faustus, so I now confuse them. I didn't like the ending of one, but I can't remember which.

I read it about ten years ago in German, but I remember I absolutely loved it. I never read marlowes, so I can't confuse them :-)

Have you read it in english? I am currently learning to read german by way of wittgensein's german/english tractacus logico philisophicus and I am looking for my next read to further my learning, would you recommend?

no, I haven't read it in english, I try to read a book in its original language. If I don't know the original language, I read it in whatever translation I can get my hands on.

I wouldn't have started with Witgenstein. Jee. Good luck. I think Goethe might be pretty difficult too. It is not altogether modern.

A german author I really like is Stefan Zweig. I will think about your question.

What would you think would be better to start with?

It depends on what you like and on your level. Maybe translations into german of books you are already familiar with? Or children books?

Das Niebelungenlied of Schiller is nice. I love Franz Kafka, but don't read it when you are feeling depressed. Heinrich boll is nice too.

what kind of books do you usually read?

I read a lot so this is a broad question lol
I will just go into what I am reading currently which I am enjoying as much as any of my past selections.

Horace's satires and epistles
Jorge Luis Borges' Ficciones(excellent essays)
Ludwig (of course)
and I am working my way through here [bartelby.com]
