On June 19th, 2005, Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of Burma's democracy movement and Nobel Peace Prize winner, will turn 60 years old. Unlike many birthdays around the world, however, she will celebrate her birthday under house arrest.

There are 1,350 political prisoners held in Myanmar, where the authorities are abusing the justice system to imprison people for acts of peaceful dissent. Join the Amnesty International's petition to the Myanmar authorities to put a stop to abuses of the justice system and to release all prisoners of conscience NOW.

Or send you friends an e-mail to let them know it is Aung San Suu Kyi's Birthday.

Thank you.

I end this post with a poem:

WAY OF THE WATER HYACINTH
by Zawgee

Bobbing on the breeze blown waves
Bowing to the tide
Hyacinth rises and falls

Falling but not felled
By flotsam, twigs, leaves
She ducks, bobs and weaves.

Ducks, ducks by the score
Jolting, quacking and more
She spins through—

Spinning, swamped, slimed, sunk
She rises, resolute
Still crowned by petals.

Translated from the Burmese by Lyn Aye
(taken from the Favourite Poem Project)
