Anne Bancroft's husband, Mel Brooks, purchased the rights to 84 Charing Cross for her as a twenty-first anniversary present, memoirs of Helene Hanff, a television writer, which detailed her correspondence with bookseller Frank Doel over twenty years.

Wasn't she also Mrs Robinson in The Graduate? If I've got the right person, I think she was one of those actresses who brought her roles to life at the expense of her own personality so that you don't remember the actress but the character. So her face isn't as memorable as ,for example Streep, though her acting was as good if not better.

One of Bancroft's more remarkable attributes was her ability to make the viewer believe in her characters. A good example is the Mrs Robinson role; she was only 36, 5 years older than Dustin Hoffman, when she played the seductive "older" woman. Now, why didn't any of my friends have a mom like that?
