I need help identifying a poem containing the words: Columbus sailed the ocean blue in fourteen hundred and ninety two. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here is a version of the 1492 poem, along with another for good luck. There are probably multiple versions out there, as with most childhood verses. (You should have seen how many versions of 'the worms crawl in, the worms crawl out' we came up with!)

IN 1492

In fourteen hundred ninety-two
Columbus sailed the ocean blue.

He had three ships and left from Spain;
He sailed through sunshine, wind and rain.

He sailed by night; he sailed by day;
He used the stars to find his way.

A compass also helped him know
How to find the way to go.

Ninety sailors were on board;
Some men worked while others snored.

Then the workers went to sleep;
And others watched the ocean deep.

Day after day they looked for land;
They dreamed of trees and rocks and sand.

October 12 their dream came true,
You never saw a happier crew!

"Indians! Indians!" Columbus cried;
His heart was filled with joyful pride.

But "India" the land was not;
It was the Bahamas, and it was hot.

The Arakawa natives were very nice;
They gave the sailors food and spice.

Columbus sailed on to find some gold
To bring back home, as he'd been told.

He made the trip again and again,
Trading gold to bring to Spain.

The first American? No, not quite.
But Columbus was brave, and he was bright.

That rings a bell ... what you said about ALL important historical events taking place in 1492. Could it be from a Richard Armor book? or something by the authors of DOWN WITH SKOOL! ???

It also reminds me of a SAT NIGHT LIVE sketch called "Common Knowledge" that was a game show about what American students think, as opposed to what is true. For example, the answer to ANY literature question was always "Hemingway."

But I don't think there was a 1492 question in the sketch.

Willans and Searle wrote "Down with skool" and 1492 didn't feature in that.

"1066 and all that" is more likely, except that I have a copy and it isn't in that either.

As I recall there WAS a 1492 question in that skit but it was the least funny part of an otherwise hilarious sketch...it was merely people getting dates wrong.

BTW Nixon is the answer to any 50's 60's or 70's political trivia !
