I need help identifying a poem containing the words: Columbus sailed the ocean blue in fourteen hundred and ninety two. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
How old are you, Tony
Your friend,
Elliot
Elloiot,
What does my age have to do with the answer?
I am trying to help my daughter with a project.
Tony,
Here is a version of the 1492 poem, along with another for good luck. There are probably multiple versions out there, as with most childhood verses. (You should have seen how many versions of 'the worms crawl in, the worms crawl out' we came up with!)

IN 1492
In fourteen hundred ninety-two
Columbus sailed the ocean blue.
He had three ships and left from Spain;
He sailed through sunshine, wind and rain.
He sailed by night; he sailed by day;
He used the stars to find his way.
A compass also helped him know
How to find the way to go.
Ninety sailors were on board;
Some men worked while others snored.
Then the workers went to sleep;
And others watched the ocean deep.
Day after day they looked for land;
They dreamed of trees and rocks and sand.
October 12 their dream came true,
You never saw a happier crew!
"Indians! Indians!" Columbus cried;
His heart was filled with joyful pride.
But "India" the land was not;
It was the Bahamas, and it was hot.
The Arakawa natives were very nice;
They gave the sailors food and spice.
Columbus sailed on to find some gold
To bring back home, as he'd been told.
He made the trip again and again,
Trading gold to bring to Spain.
The first American? No, not quite.
But Columbus was brave, and he was bright.

Columbus Day Song
(sung to the tune of "The Farmer in the Dell")
In 1492,
In 1492,
Columbus sailed across the sea,
In 1492.
For 70 days he sailed,
For 70 days he sailed,
Columbus sailed across the sea,
For 70 days he sailed.
He came to a new land,
He came to a new land,
Columbus sailed across the sea,
And came to a new land.
Exploring he did go,
Exploring he did go,
Columbus sailed across the sea,
Exploring he did go.
He sailed back home to Spain,
He sailed back home to Spain,
Columbus sailed across the sea,
Then sailed back home to Spain.
Christopher Columbus
In August 1492,
Columbus sailed the ocean blue.
October 12th they sighted land,
And set their feet upon new sand.
Thank you. If you know who wrote, that would help also!! Thanks again.
Yes, Pam! I remember that "worms crawl in, worms crawl out" compendium! Who'd've thought there were so many versions? Now that was an interesting thread!
Alex, I'll take famous Emule topics for a thousand, please.

I'm looking for the text to a children's poem about all the signficant happenings in history taking place in 1492. I have a portion of the poem, but I don't know if I have all the verses. Where could I find the complete text, the author's name, and title? Thank you. Jan
I have a portion of the poem
What is the portion you have?
That rings a bell ... what you said about ALL important historical events taking place in 1492. Could it be from a Richard Armor book? or something by the authors of DOWN WITH SKOOL! ???
Worth checking...
It also reminds me of a SAT NIGHT LIVE sketch called "Common Knowledge" that was a game show about what American students think, as opposed to what is true. For example, the answer to ANY literature question was always "Hemingway."
But I don't think there was a 1492 question in the sketch.
Willans and Searle wrote "Down with skool" and 1492 didn't feature in that.
"1066 and all that" is more likely, except that I have a copy and it isn't in that either.
Hi Hugh Clary, This is what I have! Would you share what verses you have?
I think of everything in school a boy has to do,
but studying history as a rule is worst of all, don't you?
The dates they are an awful sight
and though I study day and night,
there's only one I have just right, that's 1492.
George Washington crossed the Delaware in 1492.
He beat the British fair and square in 1492.
In Concord and in Lexington he kept the redcoats on the run
while the band played Johnny Get Your Gun, in 1492.
The Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock in 1492.
and the Indians standing on the dock said "What you going to do?"
They said, "We seek your harbor here,
that our children's children's children dear,
can say their forefathers landed here," in 1492.
Do you know other verses> Thank you for your time and assistance.
Jan
Talk about self-referential!

I think 1066 AND ALL THAT is the book containing this gem:
"The Elizabethan period comes at the end of Elizabeth."
If it doesn't come, she gets worried.
pam
AND PROUD OF IT!
As I recall there WAS a 1492 question in that skit but it was the least funny part of an otherwise hilarious sketch...it was merely people getting dates wrong.
BTW Nixon is the answer to any 50's 60's or 70's political trivia !
Mister
Christopher Columbus
Got aboard a wooden ship and
sailed the seas without a compass
(from the "extended " version of "sing sing sing)
I guess i was wrong...looky what i found ( i love google but not enough to buy it in an IPO)
CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS
Andy Kirk
Mister Christopher columbus
Sailed the sea without a compass
When his men began a rumpus
Up spoke, Christopher Columbus
There is land somewhere
Until we get there,
We will not go wrong,
If we sing, "swing a song"
Since the world is round,
We'll be safe and sound
Til our goal is found,
We'll just keep rhythm bound
Soon the crew was makin merry
Then came a yell, "Let's drink to Isabelle,
Hum, bring the rum, Ho Hum"
No more mutiny,
What a time at sea
With di-plo-ma-cy
Christy made his-to-ry
Mister Christopher Columbus
He used rhythm as a compass
Music ended all the rumpus
Wise old Christopher Columbus
