I Need a Refresher Course
Posted by: joe-t (192.168.128.---)

I'd appreciate it if Les, or anyone else, would me remind me once again how to add pictures, website links, how to perform special editing tasks, etc. here on emule. Pointing me to the threads where these lessons were originally posted will do just fine. I promise to print the instructions and not lose them ever again...really.

Thanks,

Joe

Adding a weblink is the easy one.....copy the link from the address field from the page you're on, and then paste it in the body of the message.

I know how to "attach" pictures but not how to put them in the body of the message.

To post an image from a web source. First find out the web source for the picture, then use the following html code: < img src = "http//www.emule.com">

And with any luck you might get something like this:

or this:

Many of the basic html tags are found here: [www.w3schools.com] or here: [www.tnellen.com]

I'm still working on the format for a background to paste onto JP's thread. I think I'll figure it out one of these days!!!!

Not directly. The administrators of the site could because the file is on the computer which contains the jpeg. For the rest of us, we'd have to use a two-step process. First attach the file to one of your posts as Lady of the Night did here: [www.emule.com]

That creates an html address for each photo posted like this: [www.emule.com]

You can then use this address elsewhere as an image source. The drawback to this is that the post which contains the attached photo must not be deleted, or the subsequent post using it as an image source would lose the source also. So if LON decided to delete her photo that link would disappear.

I guess I'm just stupid...I get the html part, but I've completely forgotten (if I ever knew) how to attach a file to a post. Sorry for keeping this thread going way beyond what it should take for me to understand.

Somewhere on your computer Joe, should be a file for pictures. If you've downloaded pictures and created jpeg files for them, you should understand what I'm talking about. If not, then you need to ask Johnny how to create them on your computer. Ususally, you just scan them or download them from your camera.

In either case, the computer makes a file for you, that file is usually saved in a file folder titled "my pictures", or some such thing. Open that folder and right click on the photo you wish to use. You can do one of several things, but I usually like to send it to the desktop and work from there. Then you can click "properties" and the file name will appear. Cut and paste the file name into the box that appears when you click the "attach button" at the bottom of your post. If this works, there should be a photo attached to this post:

I'm getting the feeling that Joe isn't getting an "Attach" button displayed, is this so?

Now that I've created an e-mule file I can post the photo as an image source like this:

Aha, that could be the problem, it may be just a "log-in" feature, just like editing a post.

There you go, Les. It's been so long since I've been able to log in that I didn't even remember there was once such a thing as an "attach" button. I guess you can't see it without logging in. All I see at the bottom are the "Preview" and "Post" buttons. Guess you'll have to rely on your mind's eye to experience the sunrise in my USP post.

Joe, you could e-mail the photos to Johnny, or me and have us attach them to one of our e-mule posts. That would create html files you could use, if you really want people to see them.

Meanwhile, we all wait for the new server to be installed here.

Here's a way to put sound on your post:

< embed SRC="*.wav" >

None of my concern, of course, but don't such files unnecessarily overburden the server with huge amounts of wasted space? Mere text messaging is much smaller than monstrous picture/sound/binary files I mean.

>don't such files unnecessarily overburden the server with huge amounts of wasted space?

Not really Hugh, all the files I've used are merely "links" to other sites where the material is stored, they only open when clicked. Perhaps if they were saved on this site like the photos peolple have attached, they might use some space, but with the capacities of today's servers it's not much of problem. Anyone could store hundreds of wav files without it effecting the performance of their home computer, let alone the type of system Rudy and Kevin have here.

They are not embedded in the pages here? They certainly seemed to be, so sorry if I was in error.

Hugh, only the "code" is embedded. It is activated whenever someone clicks
on this link. In essence, it is like hiding the hyperlink: [www.whyaduck.com]

I notice that since Rudy's latest tinkering, the smiley jifs don't work. Anything else that's not the same? :) :D ;)

Is there a reason why the Javascript is disabled here?
