That poem is about youth and death.

Natures first green is gold
Her hardest hue to hold
Her early leafs a flower
But only so an hour
Then leaf subsides to leaf
So Eden sank to grief
And dawn goes down to day
Nothing gold can stay

It is basically going over the years as they pass by. \"Nature\'s first green is gold\" talks about a child, curious and ready to experience the world. Happy with simple things and seeing good in the world. \"Her early leafs a flower but only so and hour\" talks about how that wonder in life does not last long, it fades and is replaced with knowledge and facts. \"Then leaf subsides to leaf, So Eden sank to grief\", Eden had been that wonderful place, but as the leaves fell and seasons changed Eve grew restless and wanted to know more, try more, have more - and lose more in the process with knowledge. \"And dawn goes down to day, nothing gold can stay\" - no one can stay gold, and death is inevitable. The way you look at things when you are a kid can never be recaptured again. Although our rememberance of God are like \"dull embers\" (as Wordsworth says), adults never really recapture what they lost in youth.

I found a wonderful interpetation of this poem in the book The Outsiders by S E Hinton.
